The Chief Nurse Anesthetist schedules and coordinates the activities of the nurse anesthetist practice group, as well, maintains a clinical role.  Functions as Nurse Anesthetist representative to the Department of Anesthesiology and the Peri-Op Service Line. 

Patient Care Responsibilities:

Meet the expectations of the Department's Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists.

Review patient charts and the relevant laboratory information; develop anesthesia care plan in collaboration with an anesthesiologist; follow-up the outcome of interventions with the post-anesthetic patient visit.
Assemble and prepare the relevant apparatus, drugs, and monitors appropriate for each anesthetic administration.
Administer anesthesia for surgical, obstetrical, and diagnostic procedures, appropriately monitoring patient at all times and maintaining the appropriate physiologic functioning of the patient.
Respond flexibly to the departmental needs of the anesthesia care team in terms of shift assignments, duties outside the operating room and in the teaching and supervision of students and trainees.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Manage and evaluate the performance of CRNA personnel within the guidelines of current policies.
Develop and monitor the orientation process for new CRNAs; assist them in identifying and meeting learning needs related to position responsibilities; encourage continued professional growth and development.
Conduct regularly scheduled staff meetings; facilitate communication among the members of CRNA staff.
Ensure personnel compliance with organizational policies and procedures; maintain complete personnel records containing credentialing, licensing, professional and clinical certifications, CME documentation, etc.

Clinical Coordination Responsibilities:

Function as CRNA representative to the Department of Anesthesiology and the Peri-Op Service Line.
Plan and organize work in a way that ensures smooth operations.

Approve time away requests.
All CRNA staff scheduling, including daily schedules and call schedules.
Arrange sufficient coverage for time away for extra coverage when house staff are not available.

SRNA scheduling; collaborate with CRNA Educator on clinical aspects of SRNA training rotation at DHMC.
Maintain patient and staff confidentiality.
Respond openly to new ideas and suggestions for improvement.
Maintain current clinical practice and remain accountable for the efficient use of time, material, and human resources.

Operations/Planning Responsibilities:

Recruit, interview and participate in the selection and hiring of CRNAs.
Attend departmental meetings; participate in planning, problem solving and decision making.
Participate in determining the goals, objectives, policies, procedures and methods of organization for the Department.

Minimum Qualifications:

Master's Degree from an accredited Nurse Anesthesia Education Program.
2 years of experience as a Nurse Anesthetist.
Demonstrated supervisory experience preferred.

Required Licensure/Certification Skills:

Current New Hampshire RN license required.
Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) required.
