POSITION SUMMARY: Responsible for assisting the medical and hospital patient care staff in ensuring quality patient care and compliance with Texas law and JCAHO requirements through quality improvement (QI) program design, and data collection, analysis and presentation. POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Designs QI studies, develops criteria for evaluation, and assists assigned hospital departments with appropriate data collection and data analysis. 2. Reviews and interprets patient care information, discharge summaries, operation reports, and other data sources used to assess quality care issues. 3. Creates reporting documents for departments to use for tracking QI activities, trends and patterns, and identifying opportunities for improvement. 4. Provides education on data analysis and utilization of information to clinical QI teams. 5. Attends and may facilitate department QI meetings, providing input regarding problem identification and resolution, continuous quality improvement (CQI), and other patient care and accreditation activities. 6. May provide ongoing clinical support to Hospital programs by reviewing and logging charts and incident reports, and recording improvement activities and results. 7. Assists with developing and maintaining effective, comprehensive continuous quality improvement program. 8. Reviews and assists in establishing indicator with a representative from each area and the Patient Care Committee; trains patient care personnel regarding the indicators used in assessment. 9. As requested, prepares reports for, and recommends research topics to, the Quality Improvement Committee. 10. Develops record keeping and reporting functions and maintains appropriate files. 11. Develops effective data collection and evaluation tools to identify opportunities to improve patient care. 12. Assists with the establishment of tools to collect and organize data used in monitoring and continually assess the success of problem resolution activities. 13. Maintains Quality Improvement Status Log, as required. 14. Completes and maintains records for problem status for follow-up. 15. Maintains and distributes corrective action reminder report to responsible persons. 16. Plans meetings and disseminates information to appropriate areas, as directed. 17. Helps develop the Quality Improvement Committee agenda, using approved agenda format.
POSITION EDUCATION/QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor's Degree in a health care field or equivalency is highly preferred, plus five years of clinical or related hospital experience. Relevant experience may be substituted in lieu of degree. Demonstrated human relation and effective communication skills required. A current Texas License to practice nursing and experience in quality improvement are strongly preferred. JOB KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE: Representative challenges of this position include determining the validity of collected data, appropriate statistical means to analyze the data, and which charts and reports best represent and display the quantitative data. High degree of competency/experience in general. Requires good communication and organizational skills. Must maintain current knowledge of Texas law and JCAHO regulations. Requires reasoning ability and good independent judgment. Requires working with frequent interruptions. Must project a professional image. Working knowledge of personal computer and software applications used in job.
