Job Summary: Responsible for direction of patient care in the behavioral healthcare setting. Consults with staff, physicians and Nurse Executive on nursing problems and interpretation of facility policies to ensure patient needs are met. Provides nursing care through physical and mental assessments, laboratory testing, treatment plans and therapeutic treatments. Knowledgeable of a wide range of disorders; cognitive, emotional, developmental, social and behavioral. Performs crisis intervention. Maintains performance improvement activities within the department and participates in CQI activities. Assists in formulating the budget.
Provides care appropriate to condition and age of patient including, pediatric, adolescent, adult and the geriatric population. Ability to perform nursing assessments on all patients and reassessments as per policy. This includes pediatric, adolescent, geriatric and the general patient population. Ability to adequately assess and reassess pain. Utilizes appropriate pain management techniques. Educates the patient and family regarding pain management. Performs thorough patient psychiatric interviews. Continuously observes patient's behavior, mental status and activities. Formulates and implements patient treatment plans; family is included when appropriate. Ability to revise treatment plans as indicated by the patient's response to treatment and evaluates overall plan daily for effectiveness. Demonstrates ability to perform treatments and provide services to level of licensure. Knowledgeable of medications, including psychotropic drugs, and their correct administration based on the age of the patient and their clinical condition. Follows the five (5) medication rights and reduces the potential for medication errors. Performs patient care responsibilities considering needs specific to the standard of care for patient's age. Demonstrates the ability to perform crisis intervention and triage. Provides psychotherapeutic treatments to patients and families; individual psychotherapy, group therapy, family therapy and educational classes. Documentation meets current standards and policies. Coordinates and directs patient care to ensure patients' needs are met and facility policy is followed. Maintains a safe environment for staff, patients/families and visitors. Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors. Communicates appropriately and clearly to the Nurse Executive, Administration, staff and physicians. Concurs with members of the treatment team for the benefit of the patient. Consults other departments as appropriate to provide for an interdisciplinary approach to the patient's needs. Treats patients and families with respect and dignity; provides emotional support. Provides education to the patient and family concerning treatment plans, compliance with the treatment plan, medications and their side effects. Functions as a patient and family advocate at all times. Assists with research studies conducted in the department. Demonstrates the ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations. Continuously supervises staff to ensure quality of nursing care. Maintains performance improvement activities for the department. Provides education to staff on performance improvement. Ability to plan and organize orientation and inservice training for unit staff members, participates in guidance and educational programs. Performs management activities including interviewing, hiring and firing. Maintains a good working relationship within the department and with other departments.
