Job summary

Job description/Responsibilities:  Director of Emergency Department is a Registered Nurse who assumes 24 hour administrative responsibility for the management and coordination of all Emergency Care Nursing Service functions. Supervises, assesses, plans, implements and evaluates the delivery of patient care. Develops and implements departmental plans including performance improvement activities and compliance with current regulations. Assumes 24 hour accountability for the ED department. Supervises and evaluates all personnel assigned to the ED and effectively utilizes nursing personnel, time responsibilities for the ED and is directly accountable to the CNO or Administrator. Consults and communicates with staff, physicians and administration both written and verbally on nursing issues and interpretation of hospital policies to ensure patient needs are met. Interacts with outside agencies, patients and patients' families/significant other(s) to provide comprehensive care. Provides triage and treatment to pediatric, adult and geriatric patients seeking emergency care. Assumes house supervisory responsibilities as assigned, including responding to codes throughout the hospital, assessing and charting, and following through with appropriate documentation.  Demonstrates thorough knowledge of the organizations mission, vision, values. Participates in development of the organizations strategic and long range plans. Maintains up-to-date knowledge of laws, regulations, and standards that affect the organization and ensures departmental compliance. Collaborates with Chief Nursing Officer to develop departmental goals consistent with those of the organization Responsible for developing Departmental Plan(s) and Scope of Service(s) and reviewing/updating at least annually. Develops and recommends operating budget(s) in collaboration with Chief Nursing Officer and Fiscal Services Monitors and assures compliance with allocated budget(s). Provides explanation/justification for +/- 10% variance (monthly) Conducts monthly department staff meetings. Assures that minutes include communication of the organizations direction and operation. Distributes minutes to appropriate individuals. Demonstrates a working knowledge of organizational policies, Medical Staff Bylaws, Rules and Regulations, and all policies affecting the departments. Collaborates with Administration, Medical Director, and other departments in planning and carrying out daily operations as appropriate. Clearly and effectively writes policies and procedures Assures uniform implementation through appropriate planning and collaboration with affected departments Maintains up-to-date department manuals which are easily accessible to staff. Maintains pertinent organizational manuals which are easily accessible to staff (i.e., Safety, Infection Control, Administrative, etc. Prepares Position Descriptions/Performance Evaluations and Equipment/Skills/Knowledge Checklist for each position supervised Recommends a sufficient number of skill mix of staff required to effectively meet the needs of the patients. Prepares, conducts and/or oversees department(s) orientation and training Interviews and hires staff and assures that qualifications are met. Assures 100% of staff attends initial orientation/annual updates and department orientation Assures completion of Equipment/Skills/Knowledge Checklist and Performance Evaluations within established time frames Coaches/counsels employees and develops clear action plan for improvement of employee Terminates employees in collaboration with Human Resources, as needed Maintains up-to-date files for all department(s) employees Facilitates and/or coordinates inservice and continuing education for department(s) personnel Participates in organization and department process for selection of improvement activities. Develops and maintains mechanism for collection and collation of data Submits Performance Improvement data in a timely manner. Recommends and implements improvements as indicated. Evaluates effectiveness of performance improvement activities Communicates space needs for optimal department(s) process for selection of improvement activities Determines supply needs for department(s) functioning Facilitates capital equipment acquisition Researches and recommends contract services/registry when needed Assures and maintains registry/contract personnel files consistent with hospital policy Reviews quality control documentation at least on a monthly basis and Institutes corrective action when indicated Investigates/follows up on complaints, issues and occurrences regarding the department(s) in a timely manner Demonstrates ability to solve problems Assures Staffing based on acuity, case mix and census Assures staff assignments are based on competency and skills of available staff Evaluates fluctuations and/or unforeseen staffing/patient care needs and takes appropriate action Identifies needs for new/additional products and/or equipment Thoroughly researches available products/equipment including meeting with vendors, company representatives, reading current literature, etc. Assesses and evaluates cost impact on patient and organization Completes annual Pronouncement of death competency Pronounces death according to policy Attends disaster training as necessary Organizes disaster drills in collaboration with Facilities Demonstrates knowledge of Reddinet. Provides patient care when necessary Accuracy assesses need for ER saturation Attends daily staffing meeting Performs all other duties as assigned or required.

Required Qualification:  1. Current and valid Texas license as a Registered Nurse. 2. Current BLS (AHA) certificate upon hire and maintain current. 3. Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)-(AHA) certificate upon hire and maintain current. 4. Current PALS upon hire and maintain current. 5. Certified Emergency Nurse (CEN) preferred. 6. A minimum of two years supervisory/management experience necessary. 7. Minimum of three years of continuous clinical experience in a clinical/acute care setting. 9. Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred. 10. Behavioral Violence Prevention (BVP) within 6 months of hire and maintain current.
