VAD Clinical Coordinator-Uncertified – Transplant – Orlando

Florida Hospital Orlando seeks to hire VAD Clinical Coordinator-Uncertified who will embrace our mission to extend the healing ministry of Christ.

Located on a lush tropical campus, our flagship hospital, 1,368-bed Florida Hospital Orlando, serves as the major tertiary facility for much of the Southeast, the Caribbean and South America. Florida Hospital Orlando houses one of the largest Emergency Departments and largest cardiac catheterization labs in the country. Work Hours/Shifts:

Monday – Friday with rotational call coverage including weekends; 8a – 5p

Job Summary:

The Ventricular Assist Device (VAD) Coordinator provides clinical expertise in their specialist area to optimize patient, family, nurse and team outcomes. This position directs VAD Program daily operations and participates in direct patient care to optimize outcomes in a fiscally responsible manner. The Coordinator supports the practice of transplant processes and VAD through presentations, collaborative practice, and knowledge of industry standards to establish clinical best practices. Actively participates in outstanding customer service and accepts responsibility in maintaining relationships that are equally respectful to all.

Proficiency with MS Office Platform, particularly Outlook and Word

Ability to ensure security and confidentiality of patient health information (PHI)
Ability to read and comprehend technical manuals, bylaws, regulations and instructions
Organ transplantation or procurement knowledge
Ability to make decisions ethically and to act as a patient advocate
Bilingual (English required/Spanish preferred)
Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing (BSN)
Two years of experience in an acute care setting within the last three years
One year of experience of advanced heart failure or post-operative cardiovascular experience
Master’s of Science in Nursing (MSN) (Preferred)
One year of critical care or palliative care experience for patients with life-limiting or life-threatening illness (Preferred)
One year of Ventricular Assist Device experience (Preferred)
One year of teaching/preceptor experience (Preferred)

Licensure, Certification, or Registration Required:

Current valid State of Florida license as a registered nurse
Current Basic Life Support (BLS)
Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
Current Clinical Coordinator Transplant Certification (CCTC) by the American Board of Transplant Certification (ABTC), or a clinical research professional certification from an organization such as Society of Clinical Research Associates (SOCRA) or Association of Clinical Research Professionals (ACRP) or Certified Heart Failure Nurse (CHFN) or Certified Heart Failure Nurse – K (CHFN – K) certification from the American Association of Heart Failure Nurses (AAHFN) (Preferred)

Job Responsibilities:

Facilitates and coordinates evaluations for potential VAD recipients including identifying appropriate candidates, review of medical records, compiling necessary testing and assisting with obtaining authorization for patient evaluation.
Performs and generates timely documentation of comprehensive clinical assessments including assessment of clinical variables including but not limited to diagnostic testing and functional status, assessment of patient’s ability to understand VAD and bridge-to-transplant process.
Attends and participates in thoracic program team meetings including patient review committee, hospital interdisciplinary rounds, discharge planning, and QAPI with the ability to communicate with the clinical team in a professional and effective manner.
Observes, monitors, assesses and reports post-VAD and heart function as defined by program protocols. Provides clinical support for VAD patients in collaboration with hospital nursing, VAD RNs, and perfusion team. Assists with discharge planning with the multi-disciplinary team, plans, and implements and evaluates patient and family-specific care appropriate to the complexity of the problems and resources available. Schedules patient’s routine diagnostic testing and follow-up care. Implements changes in drug treatment therapy as ordered by the physician(s) and/or health care providers.
Actively participates in VAD equipment and device accessory management. Serves as a liaison between the hospital and payers, collaborating with Durable Medical Equipment (DME) providers to ensure appropriate allocation of supplies for care. Responsible for ensuring timely preventative maintenance on all VAD equipment, and replacement of equipment according to vendor standards.
Facilitates the development of the VAD program through teaching, coaching, and role modeling. Educates patients and their families regarding clinical aspects of their disease, purpose, and nature of treatment and research protocols. Educates patients and their families on device and device-related equipment providing reinforcement on how to care for themselves and provides feedback on their progress
Participates in industry-sponsored research-related protocols and maintenance of the transplant/ VAD statistical databases including patient recruitment for studies and assisting with the execution of all study-related activities per protocol.
Participates with the ongoing education of internal and external stakeholders in the care of VAD patients. Educates nurses and other multidisciplinary team members about patient care issues to promote positive outcomes for VAD patients. Acts as a liaison with the patient community, referring providers and the multi-disciplinary team in an effort to create a Shared Care model.
Pro-actively initiates quality improvement ideas and suggestions in an effort to improve the patient experience of care (including quality and satisfaction), improve the health of the populations served and reduce the cost of clinic care. Actively participates in surveys (on-site and desktop) from regulatory and licensing agencies.
Assists with the on-boarding, training and professional development of new VAD Coordinator(s) and mentorship of select individuals within the transplant programs. In addition, serves as preceptor for Advanced Heart Failure Nurses and VAD Graduate Nurses.
